Types of Amputations

Traumatic amputations – those caused by accidents – occur in different places on the body and have different effects. Doctors will classify it is either complete or partial. In a partial, pieces of muscle or bone may keep the limb connected to the body, or only part of an extremity may have been lost. A complete means the body part is separated from the rest of the body.

There are more than a dozen categories of amputation. Some of the most common include:

  • Trans-tibial amputation – Below-the-knee amputation, preserving the knee joint.
  • Knee disarticulation – Amputation of the entire lower leg and knee joint.
  • Trans-femoral amputation – Amputation somewhere between the hip and knee; the victim retains use of the hip.
  • Hip disarticulation – Removal of the entire leg, including the femur. Part of the hip joint may be left intact.
  • Trans-radial amputation – Amputation of the hand, wrist, and forearm, leaving the elbow intact.
  • Elbow disarticulation – Amputation at the elbow joint.
  • Trans-humeral amputation – Between the elbow and shoulder joints.
  • Wrist disarticulation – The hand and wrist joint are removed.
