How to Claim Compensation in a Multiple Car Accident

To claim compensation in an accident like this one, the victim/s should follow these steps:

1. Identify Your Role in the Accident

  • Were you a driver, passenger, or pedestrian involved in the crash? Your role impacts how you pursue compensation.
  • If you were not directly involved but suffered damages (e.g., property damage from debris), you may still have a claim.

2. Obtain the Police Report

  • The LAPD or investigating authorities will have a report detailing the accident. This report will indicate a preliminary fault and include key evidence, such as witness statements and crash details. Contact the Northridge area precinct to request a copy or request your California accident police report here.

4. Exchange Information

  • If you were involved in the accident, ensure you have contact and insurance information for all other drivers. If you were a passenger, request this from the driver or authorities.

5. Keep Medical Records

  • If you were one of the seven injured individuals, request detailed documentation of your injuries and treatment from the hospital or medical provider. These records will support your claim for medical expenses and pain and suffering.

6. Determine Fault

  • Based on the report and evidence, establish who caused the accident. California’s comparative negligence laws mean you can still recover compensation even if you were partially at fault, though your award may be reduced proportionally.

8. Hire a Personal Injury Lawyer

  • Given the complexity of this multi-vehicle collision and potential disputes over fault, consult a personal injury lawyer in Los Angeles County. They can handle negotiations and ensure you receive fair compensation.

9. Include Specific Damages

  • Seek compensation for:
    • Medical Expenses: Immediate and ongoing treatment for injuries.
    • Lost Wages: If you were unable to work due to the accident.
    • Property Damage: Vehicle repairs or replacement costs.
    • Pain and Suffering: Physical and emotional trauma.
    • Out-of-Pocket Costs: Transportation or any additional expenses caused by the crash.

10. Cooperate With Investigators

  • If you were directly involved, law enforcement or insurance adjusters may contact you for statements. Stick to the facts and avoid admitting fault without consulting an attorney.
